When living at home with a caregiver is no longer enough for your family member with dementia- it doesn’t matter whether it’s because of caregiver fatigue or illness, failure of outside support services or just an overall quality of life or safety issue- you’ll need help in evaluating care options and making decisions.
How do you find the right memory care assisted living residence?
Here are a few tips:
Look for a licensed, SECURE Memory Care Residence where you will find specially trained caregivers and many other benefits that aren’t available in “regular” assisted living.
What other services are available on the same campus- is skilled nursing and/or rehabilitation available?
Is there an RN on staff?
Are the caregivers licensed CNAs and CMAs?
Does the facility provide medication management?
Is the building built to healthcare standards?
Is the residence all on one floor?
Can residents with Alzheimer’s or other dementia age in place?
If the answer to any of those above questions is no…you may not have the right place.
What is the activity program like- are the activities varied and going in to the evening or is it sparse and not well staffed on weekends?
Does the facility feature failure free activities tailored toward adults with cognitive impairment?
Is it clean?
How is the food?
How is the lighting? Is there an abundance of both natural and artificial lighting? The older we get, the more light we need to see.
Do you feel like you are being “sold” or “educated” when you visit?
Finding the right place means doing the research, both online and in person.
